Telford is a large new town in the borough of Telford and Wrekin and ceremonial county of Shropshire, England. With a population of approximately 140,000 people, Telford is by far the largest town in Shropshire, and one of the fastest growing towns in the country. Telford was named after its most famous adopted son - Thomas Telford - a Scotsman by birth he became a surveyor of public works in Shropshire in 1787. With an excellent reputation as an engineer he was given the task of building a bridge over the River Severn, known today as Ironbridge, he went on to build canals linking ironworks and collieries, bridges and docks as well as roads, Thomas Telford built more than 1,000 miles of road in his lifetime and it is no wonder that when Telford, the town, was being conceived that they should name it after such an influential individual who had strong links with the area.
