Sited seven miles from the sea, Holt has swapped its market for a bevy of antique and curio shops, restaurants and delicatessens. If Burnham is Chelsea-on-Sea, Holt serves as the Fulham of North Norfolk. The town is predominantly Georgian, thanks to the huge fire of May 1 1708 that wiped away a lot of the ancient buildings. It is mentioned in the Doomsday Book, and there has been a church on the site near the market place for over 900 years, although the current St Andrew the Apostle dates from the 14th century. Even in those distant days Holt was the slightly poorer cousin of its coastal neighbours, the church being less grandiose than those at Cromer and Blakeney for instance, but it has a delightfully elegant tree-lined path through the churchyard to the tower entrance.
