Crook is a small market town in County Durham, England. It is situated about 10 miles south-west of Durham. Crook is the administrative centre of the Wear Valley District Council. The first records of Crook are as a small agricultural village around 1800 but by 1840 it had become a thriving coal mining village. The coal seam here was very close to the surface so it was not long before there were over twenty mines in the area and by the end of the nineteenth century, Crook had become a town and seen rapid development in both population and economy. |
