Chulmleigh is a remote, Saxon hilltop town located in the heart of Devon. It is located 20 miles north west of Exeter in the North Devon district just north of the district boundary, linked by the A377 and the B3096. The woodland around Chulmleigh and Eggesford Forest is quite ancient and walkers will enjoy numerous scenic routes in this quiet, unspoilt countryside. Many interesting plants are to be found including the wood anemone, wood sorrel and spurge. In Heywood Wood are earth ramparts of a Norman motte and bailey castle. The brown owl and largest population of wild otters in England are also present. Chulmleigh parish has been designated an Area of Rural Tranquillity and an Area of Great Landscape Value. Chulmleigh was originally settled in 815 by the Saxons and named Ceolmund’s Leigh, after its founder, who appreciated the hunting potential for deer and wild boar in the nearby forests.
