Holmrook is a linear village in the English county of Cumbria. Holmrook lies along the A595 road on the west banks of the River Irt. The B5344 road connects it to Drigg with its railway station less than two miles to the west. The name is derived from the Scandinavian and means "Island of Rooks". The Irish left their mark here too, in the beautiful 9th century cross in the churchyard of St Paul's Ireton, a mile outside the village. This 10' high cross pre-dates the arrival of the Norsemen, and is beautifully simple, without figurative design, its decoration being fret and vine patterns. St Paul's church is a Victorian replacement for a more ancient building, but it is noteworthy for stained-glass windows by Burne-Jones.
